A queenless colony. What the app shows

Plan: Apisense AI and Apisense PRO AI

The Apisense app does not detect a missing queen from the measurements. There is no alert and no "queenless" status. You confirm a missing queen yourself during an inspection. Record it in a note.

What the app does not detect

  • The VitalSensor and the Scale do not give a "queenless" signal. A change of the hive temperature or mass can have many causes. Such a change is not a diagnosis.
  • Disease alerts are about diseases, not about a missing queen.
  • The app has no field or status to mark a hive as "queenless".

What can help in the app

  • Frame photo: show the app a photo of a frame, and it tells you what occurs in the colony. The result shows, for example, eggs and larvae in Comb composition, Queen cells and Queen cups, and Queen in Bee census. If the queen is not visible in the photo, this does not mean that she is not in the hive.
  • Inspection: record in the inspection what you see in the hive.

How to record a missing queen

  1. Open the hive. Select the Notes tab.
  2. Add a note, for example "No queen, no eggs. 14.05".
  3. Tap Save.

The app can add a label about the missing queen to the note. The app adds the labels automatically. You cannot change them manually.

When the colony gets a new queen, change the data in the Queen section. See How to record queen data and a queen replacement.

What to do with the VitalSensor in a queenless colony

Keep the VitalSensor in the hive if the colony is alive. The VitalSensor data continues to show if the colony recovers. If the colony died, see The colony died or the hive is empty. Apisense PRO AI
