How the devices connect to the app

The VitalSensor and the Scale send data over Bluetooth (BLE) to the Hub. The Hub sends data over the LTE mobile network to the server. The app shows the data from the server. Without a Hub, the VitalSensor and the Scale do not send data.

The data path

  1. The VitalSensor and the Scale measure in the hive.
  2. The VitalSensor and the Scale send the measurements over Bluetooth to the Hub of their apiary.
  3. The Hub sends the data over LTE to the Apisense server.
  4. The app on the phone or in the browser shows the data from the server.

The phone does not connect to the VitalSensor or the Scale over Bluetooth. You do not have to be in the apiary to read the data.

What the Hub needs

  • Mobile network coverage at the installation place. Use your phone on site to check the coverage.
  • A place outdoors. A Hub under a roof or in a room loses GPS and coverage.
  • Devices at a distance of up to 35 m. This is the Bluetooth range between the Hub and the VitalSensor or the Scale.
  • Energy from the solar panel or from a charger.

The Hub has a SIM card inside. Data transfer is included in the plan price. You do not pay for it separately. One Hub supports up to 100 devices.

The Hub connects only over the LTE mobile network. The Hub does not connect over Wi-Fi.

A device belongs to a hive, a Hub to an apiary

  • The VitalSensor and the Scale are assigned to a hive, not to a Hub.
  • A device sends data through the Hub of the apiary where its hive is.
  • If you move a device to a hive in a different apiary, the system assigns it to the Hub of that apiary automatically. You do not scan the QR code of the Hub.
  • The device must physically be in the range of the new Hub. If not, it does not send measurements.
  • The ColonyLink does not connect to the Hub. The ColonyLink is a tag with NFC and a QR code. The phone reads it from a short distance and opens the correct hive.
