Asian hornet: how to report it and what I see in the app¶
Plan: Apisense AI and Apisense PRO AI
You report an Asian hornet observation from the apiary card. You also report when you do not see it. Both answers go to the observation history of the apiary.
Where to report the Asian hornet¶
On the Apiaries screen, the apiary card has an Asian hornet banner. The banner text changes with the last report:
- Spotted an Asian hornet? with the Report observation button: nobody has reported an observation yet.
- Asian hornet nearby! with the Report a new observation button: the last report says there were hornets.
- No Asian hornet reports with the Report a new observation button: the last report says there were no hornets.
The banner also shows the date of the last observation.
The apiary owner and a person with Full access see the banner. For the first few days after you add an apiary, there is no banner. In this time you start the devices.
How to report an observation¶
- Tap the banner on the apiary card. The Asian hornet window opens.
- Tap Report observation.
- Answer the question Do you see an Asian hornet now?.
- No: the app saves the report at once and shows Report saved.
- Yes: fill in the form:
- Date observed: today by default. You can pick a date up to one year back. You cannot pick a date in the future.
- Hive (optional): pick the hive where you see the hornets. If it is not about one hive, keep Whole apiary.
- Comment (optional): for example the number of individuals, the location, the behaviour.
- Photos (optional): up to 10 photos.
- Tap Send report.
The photos upload in the background. The app then shows Report saved, uploading photos in the background.
Be careful when you take photos. The Asian hornet can sting.
How to tell the Asian hornet from the European hornet¶
In the form, tap ⓘ next to the species name. How to recognise the Asian hornet? opens:
- The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) is smaller, the workers are approx. 25 mm. It is almost black and has yellow leg tips.
- The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is larger, up to 35 mm. The abdomen is mostly yellow. Do not report this species.
How long a report stays current¶
A report stays current for a few days from the observation date. Then the observation expires. The Asian hornet window then shows the date with Last seen and the text The observation has expired.
The Apisense team sets how long a report stays current. It is the same for all apiaries. You cannot extend it. If the hornets are still there, report a new observation.
Where the observation history is¶
In the Asian hornet window, tap Observation history. The button is there when the apiary has at least one report.
Each row of the history shows:
- Hornets seen or Checked, clear,
- Active sighting or Observation expired,
- Reported with the date, and the number of photos,
- On the apiary card next to the report that the banner shows.
When the last report says there were hornets, the window also has the View observation button. It shows the date, the comment and the photos.
The hornets are gone, or I reported by mistake¶
- The hornets are gone: report a new observation and answer No. The history keeps both observations.
- A report by mistake: in the Asian hornet window, tap Undo report and confirm. The report is removed from the history. You can also undo a single entry in Observation history.
Use Undo report only for a mistake.
Observation reminder¶
The app can show the Observation reminder window. The window lists the apiaries where the last report is old or where there was no report. Record the current state or close the window with Close. The reminder comes at most once a day.
Good to know¶
- Reports work also after your plan expires.
