Suspected foulbrood. What to do?

Plan: Apisense PRO AI

American foulbrood is a notifiable disease. A foulbrood alert in the app is a suspected disease, not a diagnosis. When you suspect foulbrood, report it to the authority in your country (in Poland: the district veterinary officer). Do not move frames or equipment from this hive.

What the foulbrood alert shows in the app

The foulbrood alert tells you that a risk of this disease has appeared. The alert has no infection level, as the varroa alert has. You see the alert on the hive screen (Hive state tab, Health card) and on the apiary screen (Health tab). It needs the Pro AI plan and a VitalSensor in the hive.

What to do when you suspect foulbrood

  1. Check the brood in the hive that the alert shows.
  2. Do not move frames or equipment from this hive to other hives.
  3. Report the suspicion. The duty to report depends on the country. Report it to the authority in your country (in Poland: the district veterinary officer).
  4. Follow the instructions of the veterinarian.
  5. Fill in the form for the alert: Answer a few questions.

What the Apisense app does not do for foulbrood

  • The app does not confirm foulbrood. Only a laboratory examination gives a confirmation.
  • The app does not report the disease to the authority for you.
  • We do not advise on treatment. The veterinarian makes the decisions.

What to do with the VitalSensor and the Scale from a hive with foulbrood

Disinfect the VitalSensor and the Scale before you use them in another hive. Do not move them to another hive before disinfection. Do not put the devices in water or in another liquid. They contain batteries and electronics.
