How to take a frame photo for analysis

One analysis is 1 to 3 photos of different frames from one hive. The photo of the middle frame is necessary. The photos of the first and the last frame in the hive are optional. The result is ready after a few minutes.

How to send frame photos for analysis

  1. Open the hive screen and the FrameSense tab. An empty tab has the Add photos for analysis button. A tab with a list has the Add button.
  2. Or: in the Hive state tab, tap the add button and select FrameSense.
  3. On the Add frame photos for analysis screen, tap the Middle (central) frame field.
  4. Select Camera or Gallery. In the camera, put the frame inside the outline (Position the frame inside the outline).
  5. Optionally, add photos in the First frame in the hive and Last frame in the hive fields.
  6. Tap Send for analysis.

The list first shows Sending photos…, then Analysing. The result has the status Analysis completed. When the result is ready, you get a notification.

How to take a good frame photo

  • Show the full frame. Do not cut off the corners or the edges.
  • The frame must fill almost all of the image, with a small margin.
  • Use a plain background when you can.
  • Each photo in one analysis must be different.
  • Use JPG or PNG photos.

Which frames to photograph for analysis

  • Middle (central) frame: a frame from the centre of the brood nest. Always necessary.
  • First frame in the hive and Last frame in the hive: the outer frames. They are optional and they improve the quality of the analysis.

Frame photos in an inspection are a different thing

An inspection also asks for photos. The front and the back of the middle frame are necessary (with the Pro AI plan: Frame with the VitalSensor). The front and the back of one outer frame are also necessary. The Top-down brood box photo is optional. The inspection photos are saved with the inspection. The inspection does not show an analysis result for these photos. Only the frame analysis gives a result with the brood, the stores and the queen cells.

Who can add a frame analysis

  • The frame analysis works in the AI and Pro AI plans.
  • After the plan expires, you see the old analyses, but you cannot add a new one.
  • With restricted access to a shared apiary, the frame analysis tab is not there.

When something does not work

  • A photo of the middle frame is required.: add a photo in the Middle (central) frame field.
  • Analysis failed: take new photos and send them again.
  • The analysis needs an internet connection to send the photos.
